I have a close friend who enjoys movies just about as much as I do and I have a bad habit of mentioning great movies that I watched on Netflix, Im horrible at remembering the titles of movies and I’m always saying I’ll get the name of the flick for you. I say this because this particular movie that I’m about to mention is no longer available to stream on Netflix and when I meant to post about this movie it was available to stream on Netflix. However it is available on Google Play and iTunes to Stream for around $2.99.
I love this movie because it reminds me of my life in a way, Danny is a building tradesman living in the suburbs with his real estate agent girlfriend Trudy who dreams of having more. She’s bored with Danny and sees no potential in Danny anymore, they have been together since high school and she feels in her heart that she is bored of him mainly because in her eyes he lacks ambition. Little does she know Danny is bored of his life as well, he feels unneeded and unappreciated. His dress and style in the beginning while she is with him reflects this, he is unkempt and unpolished.
When Trudy cancels the vacation that he’s been looking forward to all year to hang out with the local newscaster that she’s been trying to sell a house to (she also has a crush on the newscaster and Danny finds out) he is crushed. Trudy attempts to compensate by offering to throw a BBQ and inviting all their friends. This is where the movie gets interesting, during the BBQ or the “barbie” as commonly called by a lot of Australians, Danny convinces his friends to help him fasten helium balloons to his deckchair and during a accidental slip of attention by his friends they momentarily let go of the deckchair and up up and away Danny goes.
Eventually Danny lands in a small town and begins this new life. I won’t tell anymore because then you won’t won’t to see the movie. But Danny finds his purpose in life and he meets the woman that will change his life but not until he closes up all loose knots from the past, mainly Trudy.
This story has so many themes running through it but my favorite is happiness and what is the meaning of happiness? What they don’t tell you is that happiness is relative, what makes you happy may not make the next person happy but does that mean you shouldn’t pursue it? Hell no! It means that you have to find what makes you happy and just do it. In the movie, Danny is kind of a weirdo, his girlfriend hates it and his friends don’t really take him seriously, but when Danny lands in the small town, people are attracted to his quirkiness and because of the belief of the town in him, his character is fully developed. Which brings me to my next point, surround yourself with people that make you feel good.
